Bruno Coulais & Les Choristes

Today is my Uncle George's birthday. He would have been about 105 today. Happy Birthday Uncle George!

Les Choristes is a wonderful little French movie about a man trying to teach some unruly boys in boarding school. He begins a chorus and changes some lives. I liked the movie but I was immediately addicted to the music. Bought the soundtrack off Amazon that very day.

The boys voices soar and the part singing trades off on the main melodic line like weaving on a Maypole. I turn it up so loud in the car I'm surprised I haven't blown my speakers. The composer is Bruno Coulais who also scored Winged Migration and some other films. He is half French, half Iraqi Jew. His music astounds me.

My favorite track on the CD is Lueur d'Ete which an online translator says means The Lure of Summer. The combination of the boys' voices weaving in and out of the melody line and the quick, staccato piano accompaniment will brighten your darkest day.
